Cat5e is the most common category today. It supports a speed of up to 1 Gbps, which is more than enough for the most common uses. The bandwidth is 100 MHz. The E in kat5e stands for enhanced, which tells us that it is a further development of the older kat5 class which could not perform higher than 100 Mbps.

UTP and FTP are two abbreviations that indicate whether the network cable is shielded or not. FTP (Foiled Twisted Pair) has a layer of foil around the bundled conductors to avoid outside interference. If you experience problems with electromagnetic interference or if the cable is to be run together with high current lines, this is a good choice. For the vast majority of installations, however, UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) is sufficient. The UTP cable lacks the extra screen, which makes it easier to work with.
