USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a very widespread standard that is supported by all computers today.
USB began as a vendor-independent standard. The objective was to produce a cheap and fast technology to be able to easily connect peripheral equipment to computers. The first version to become commercially significant was USB 1.1 (also known as USB Full Speed).
USB 2.0 is also known under the name USB Hi-Speed. This version has been standard for many years and is theoretically 40 times faster than its predecessor. The standard is also backwards compatible with previous versions. According to the specification, USB 2.0 can handle up to 480 Mbps and therefore works well with external DVD readers, hard drives and other multimedia accessories. In order to use the higher speed, the entire chain must support USB 2.0.
